Our Commitment

EdTech Privacy & Child Safety Pledge

Chirp aims for secure, encrypted data isolation, informed by Safer Technologies for Schools (ST4S) guidelines and New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 principles. This page is a human-readable, non-legal summary of what that means in practice. It does not replace, and should be read alongside, our full Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, which set out your rights, our retention practices, and how to contact us.

This pledge describes our design intent and current practice in plain language. It is not a certification of ST4S compliance, an independent security audit, a guarantee of Privacy Act 2020 compliance, or a promise of absolute, unbreakable security — no system can honestly make that promise.

Zero Ads

Chirp never shows third-party advertising to tamariki, and a learner's activity or progress data is never used to target ads, build advertising profiles, or sold to advertisers or data brokers.

This pledge is about advertising specifically. It does not mean Chirp collects zero analytics or uses zero cookies — some session, preference, and offline-sync storage is still used, as described in our Privacy Policy.

Client-Side Voice Privacy

Voice capture and initial processing happen on-device in the browser. A recording is only uploaded to our managed storage if an adult deliberately chooses to save it — for example, when creating a custom character pack or a custom gestalt phrase recording.

We do not claim that every recording always stays on-device forever — once an adult opts to save one, it is stored server-side like other optional parent-managed media, under the same account-scoped access controls as the rest of a learner's profile.

Data Kaitiakitanga

We treat student and whānau data as something we are trusted to look after, not something we own. Schools and whānau retain ownership and control of student learning records and any custom content they create.

We are guided by New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 principles and use the Safer Technologies for Schools (ST4S) framework as a design benchmark. This is a statement of intent and practice, not a claim of completed ST4S certification, independent audit, or guaranteed statutory compliance.

Low-Arousal Ergonomics

Every child-facing screen is designed to be calm: no flashing, no particle effects, no pop-up interruptions, and generously sized touch targets, so a learner's nervous system is never placed under unnecessary pressure while they read.

Sensory calm is a design commitment we hold ourselves to across the product, not a medical or therapeutic claim about any individual learner's regulation or outcomes.

Encryption Standards

Data moving between a device and our servers travels over encrypted HTTPS, and server-side access to account, license, and learner data is scoped to the authorised adult account it belongs to.

We do not claim blanket encryption of browser storage, which holds small preferences and caches, cached content and a queued progress outbox. A–Z customisations, saved A–Z Board Themes and sentence stories are stored under the owning licence and sent over encrypted transport. We do not publish or guarantee a specific encryption-at-rest algorithm. If your school requires that detail for procurement, please contact us directly.

What is stored, and where

Adult accounts, learner profiles, progress records, custom character packs and gestalt phrases, A–Z tile customisations, saved A–Z Board Themes and sentence stories are stored server-side under the owning licence, so they appear on devices using that licence. Pictures and recordings are optional and uploaded only when an adult saves them; voice capture and initial processing happen on-device. Only small preferences and caches, cached content and a queued progress outbox remain on-device. Account data can be removed on request at admin@chirp.org.nz. For the full picture of what we collect, why, how long we keep it, and how to request access, correction, or deletion, please see our Privacy Policy.
